Native home...

I returned to my native Donegal in 2014 from living in London and working in the field of architecture. In 2015 I became part of the Create-a-link project in Letterkenny and embarked on a path to my true passion of visual art. Since then I have had works accepted for open call exhibitions (Donegal, Sligo, Mayo and the RHA in Dublin), three public commissions, exhibited a body of work at the Parallax Art Fair in London, had two solo exhibitions, and currently a duo exhibition “Two Threads to a Landscape”.

Painter of expressive rural and urban landscapes...

I am a painter of expressive rural and urban landscapes, based in Donegal and occasionally travel for the excitement of city life. My rural works explore the distinctive light found in the west of Donegal and how dwellings and structures inhabit the rugged landscape. In paralllel my urban artworks are vibrant, busy, and populated. I work in oil, watercolour, collage and drawing, of varying size and formats. The excitement of charcoal and paint enable me to transfer my feelings for the landscape into the pictures. The bold marks yield vitality. Drawings made in the landscape, along with reference photos, are used in the studio as points of departure for a way of painting which is exploratory and intuitive. I connect with the ethos of the ‘School of London’ painters as having a deep influence on my value for painting. David Bomberg is another important influence where my process is about responding to the experience of being in the landscape, in an attempt to capture the scene shifting about.
